Not all travel agencies are good for all consumers, so the first thing you want to do is find an agent who understands your lifestyle. If you need kid friendly vacations, find one who can get great deals on the places families like to go. If you’re gay or lesbian, find an agency that understands GLBT consumers.

Some travel agents may have better knowledge of overseas travels than others, so certainly, you want that consumer advocate when you travel abroad. It’s pretty rare that you’d get caught up in a vacation scam if you’re using the right agent.

Most reports indicate that consumer travel will not be affected by another summer of high fuel costs. That holds true for driving. Air travel is a little different story.

Summer travel destinations don’t want to lose your business because gas is high. The travel industry is well aware of how much fuel can affect their profits, so you may want to look for the lure. Most people who are biting the bullet and finally taking that long overdue vacation are also packing a cooler full of food and drinks. They may also be driving all night to reduce lodging costs. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

Watch out for vacation scams. One of the most common is the one that comes in the mail via a little post card. It invites you to somewhere wonderful, like Florida, for an all-expense paid vacation. It sounds really great. Sometimes they even tempt you with the chance to win a car or home stereo system. What are you really getting yourself into?

That Vacation Was Meant to Sell You a Time Share

Once you get to sunny Florida, you’ll be met by a salesman who will show you a beautiful piece of real estate. He wants to sell it to you. It’s not where you’ll be staying for your vacation. With any luck, he’ll convince you to buy a time share in that condo. This may be something you want to do, but slow down before you agree to purchase.

To get your money out of a time share, you have to use it more than once. Is that condo somewhere you think would want to visit on multiple occasions? Would it be available when you wanted to use it?
